how often do you use blush? As I was going through what I affectionately call my “makeup closet” the other day with a friend, I realized that I really didn’t seem to have much in the way of blush. To be honest, I never really gave it that much thought. Like every other beauty addict, I had my NARS Orgasm, plus one more NARS blush that I loved called Crazed. I had a few limited edition blushes from MAC collections that I liked, including Hello Kitty and Lily Pulitzer. I had one or two cream formulas that I had picked up with “gift with purchase” deals, but that was really it. It just didn’t seem balanced, given the literal bins of eyeshadows, lipsticks, foundations, and palettes I had, and all of this started me thinking: why didn’t I take my blush more seriously?

So I’m asking you, as I put together my tour de force on blushes, how often do you use blush?  Continue reading »

I’m having a blue hair moment right now. I’m seeing a lot of it on Pinterest, but not so much out in public. I’d love to dip dye my black hair, and even tried to do it with a demi glaze color last week, but my hair is way too dark. I’m thinking about just adding in some clip extensions instead when I’m feeling it. In the meantime, here are my inspirations. Would you rock blue hair? Continue reading »

The Spa at Mario BadescuWhen I was in NYC for Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, I had the amazing opportunity to visit the original Mario Badescu spa in Midtown East at 320 East 52nd Street, 2nd Avenue is the closest cross street.

The spa is located in the same space is always has been, but they have been taking over more space in the building as it becomes available, so it’s a bit spread out, but there is always someone to show you the way. Each aesthetician moves between two private rooms during your visit – as you are steaming, she is applying a facial mask across the hall, that sort of thing. Trust me, you never wait longer than your treatment for your aesthetician to come back in and finish your facial.

I had the European facial, which features a thorough cleansing, a steam, extractions, and at least two masks typed for your individual skin. It was comfortable, relaxing, and I left feeling like my face had never felt better – and the extractions didn’t hurt a bit. Nor was my face red and puffy when I left (which has happened many, many times at other spas).

A standard facial will only cost you $65 (how is that possible in NYC? They are more expensive here in Virginia Beach, and not nearly as good), and you can add on treatments such as a seaweed treatment ($35), a ginko-collagen treatment ($30), or an alpha peeling treatment ($20), among many others. You can find the entire list of add-on treatments on their facial page.

My aesthetician recommended the Vitamin C treatment, which is full of anti-oxidants and excellent for preventing the signs of aging. While I don’t have many visible signs of aging, I’m most interested in keeping it that way. My skin looked noticeably brighter, and I took home the Vitamin C Serum and the Rose Hips Mask to keep the goodness coming. Reviews of those will be posted soon.

If you’re in the city, and are interested in fantastic skin care, call the Mario Badescu Spa at (212) 758.1065 to schedule an appointment. I promise you that you simply will not regret it.

retrodivas video of the weekFall makes me happy. It’s time to put away the nudes, light pinks, and bronze lip colors and break out the sultry reds and burnished berries as well as the dark glosses. I’m back to lipliners and three step lip looks: liner, lipstick, and gloss. This video is a sample of one of my fall/winter mainstay lip looks, and you’ll see more of these videos in the future, so stay tuned!

retrodivas video of the weekHave you noticed that foam hair color is the big new hair coloring trend? While I’m a tried and true DIY’er when it comes to my hair color, I’ve only ever used a gel developer and a brush/bowl combination. So I was determined to take a look at the foam and see how it stands up.

A few things I used in the tutorial:

Beauty Blogs Backstage

My Lips But Better is a fantastic review blog that manages to touch the very high end (are you interested in the new yellow Chanel nail polish?) along with drugstore favorites (she really liked the L’Oreal One Sweep Eyeshadow). I managed to catch up to her and ask her seven questions about beauty stuff – check out her answers and be sure to head on over to her blog and check it out.

1. What is your favorite go-to makeup line and why? Probably MAC because their products are great quality (for the most part, every brand has a few duds) and the prices are good compared to high end brands. Plus, the brushes are amazing.

2. How often do you blog? I try to post 7 days a week but it usually ends up being more like 6. I vary between writing most of my posts on the weekend and scheduling them ahead vs. writing posts the night before they go up.

3. Where is your favorite place to buy beauty items? I love Sephora! Department stores still intimidate me, so I love having the freedom to try things out without pushy salespeople. I also love to shop online because you can get such good discounts that way.

4. Those of us in the US are always fascinated by brands in other countries. What UK brands do you recommend us Yanks try? Haha well actually I am a U.S. blogger but I’m friends with a lot of U.K. bloggers so I still have some ideas. I’m beyond jealous of British people’s access to Boots, Shu Uemura, Barry M, Lanolips, Bioderma, and Rouge Bunny Rouge. I hope to see some of these brands in person when I visit London this summer!

5. Tell us about your skin care routine – do you always do the same thing? I tend to set a routine and stick with it as long as my skin looks good. Right now I remove my makeup with a Yes to Blueberries wipe when I get home, then wash with Cerave Foaming cleanser before bed and either apply a retinoid cream or some Korres Yogurt moisturizer (alternating nights). In the morning I just rinse my face with water and make sure to wear sunscreen during the day.

6. What is your overall makeup philosophy? More is less? More is more? Full on glam all the time? For me personally? I like a more natural look with a lot of emphasis on real looking skin (I love freckles) and the lashline. But overall, my philosophy is that you should wear whatever makes you feel best. Some people prefer more makeup than me and some people prefer less – I don’t look down on any of them.

7. How many bottles of nail polish do you own? I’m actually pretty good about this… I make sure to swap/sell the ones I’m not using on a regular basis. I’m not at home to count right now, but I think it’s about 35 (including base and top coats).

While browsing about in the drugstore not too long ago, I came across this new product. I was fascinated with the concept, so I had to purchase it and try it. Here I tell you about the color, pigment, and the freaky applicator, as well as whether or not it’s worth it.

A gentle reader asked me recently on Twitter how to do the cat eye. I figured this sort of thing would best be explained by a video. Here are the products I used:

Akasha Spa in Salt Lake City UtahI was in Salt Lake City this past week for a work conference, and noticed that on the first day, I had plenty of time to see the sights and have some time to myself. Since I’d been there several times before and had seen most of what there is to see (big huge temple, check; salt lake, check;) I decided that my time would best be spent enjoying a spa day.

I didn’t know anyone who knew anything about Salt Lake City spas, unfortunately, so I was left to my own devices on Yelp. I narrowed my choices down to three, and decided that since I was acting on some serious short notice (only 24 hours), I’d take what I could get.

Luckily, what I got was Akasha. They were able to fit in two of us at exactly the right time, so we scheduled a deep tissue massage and a pedicure, because my poor feet were looking busted up, as it were.

We were greeted immediately when we walked in and shown to the locker room. A great touch was the personalized lockers with individual keys that could be on the wrist or left in the pocket of the amazing robe that was tucked inside with some slippers. Once my eyes adjusted to the dimness of the locker room and space, I was enchanted by the candles and calmness that enveloped the spa. After we slipped into our robe and slippers, we were invited to go into the meditation room to have tea and wait for our respective appointments.

The tea bar was nicely stocked, with several flavors of mint tea, cold water, and fruit snacks. There was a large water fountain that added just enough soothing sound to the room to kill the dead silence. Jessica, my massage therapist was prompt, and came out to get me just as I was pouring myself a nice cup of tea. She took me into the room, and got busy with asking me questions – did I have any specific problems? areas of concern? I told her about my long flight in crappy airline seats that always made my lower back ache after a few hours, as well as my constant struggle with bruxism (clenching of the jaw, which makes all the muscles in my head, neck, and shoulders hurt), and we decided to focus on the back, shoulders, neck, and head. And focus she did – her massage was amazing. Easily one of the best I’ve ever had – she got in there and eased muscles that I didn’t even realize were sore, and I am not a massage novice.

After being melted down like soft butter, Jessica escorted me back to the meditation room, where I waited for the nail technician to take me to the pedicure room. She was prompt as well, and we headed on into the room where there were large pedicure spa chairs with warm water already running. The nail tech made sure I had not shaved that day, and I picked out my color. The color selection wasn’t extensive, but there were plenty to choose from. OPI was the major player here, with a good selection from CND as well. The pedicure was fairly quick, and the results outstanding.

Afterwards, we headed back into the meditation room to wait for my toes to dry. After helping myself to another chamomile tea, I settled in to enjoy the fountain and music. It was all very soothing, and I could have spent the rest of the day just chilling out.

Overall my experience was excellent, and a special shout out to Jessica for being an outstanding massage therapist. Price-wise, I would have paid anything to have Jessica work on me, but a $50 pedicure was a bit shocking.

Next time, I’ll skip the pedicure, have a great massage, and maybe hang out in the steam room afterwards.

retrodivas feed reader beauty stories of the weekI haven’t done a very good job at keeping up with my reading this week. No real reason why, other than I’ve been reading a book that I can’t put down and I haven’t been on my laptop as much as usual. Let’s hope that changes next week!

Beauty Blogs Backstage

It’s time again for our Beauty Blogs Backstage feature, where we take a closer look at the person behind the blog. This month we meet Sara from The Makeup Snob. Here are our five questions to Sara:

  1. You are definitely not afraid of color. Do you have any tips for those who are just starting to make some bolder choices? I have so much fun with color! I think adding a pop of color on the crease is the easiest way to step into using it. If you feel like its too much you can always darken the other corner of your eye to make it less intense and of course less darkening as you start to feel more comfortable!
  2. Do you have a favorite drugstore/mass-merchandiser beauty brand? Why is it your favorite? I have been really impressed with alot of the stuff that I have seen poping up around the drugstores. There are definitely bits and pieces I like from many brands but Revlon is the one I always scope out the sales for. I like the powders and foundations for everyday use.
  3. I’m fascinated with skin care at the moment. Do you have any particular products that you just can’t live without? I love Origins and Philosophy. I I couldn’t say anything bad about anything I have tried from these lines. But my ultimate favorite cant do without skin-care item is Philosophy’s Purity. Nothing makes my face feel as soft and clean~!
  4. What is your signature fragrance? I have a really sensitive nose and alot of scents are too intense for me. I tend to avoid floral and lean more toward vanilla and fruitier perfumes. My ultimate favorite is Sarah Jessica Parker Covet. I have used this for quite some time and have never come across anything I felt I could replace it with.
  5. Let’s play the “desert island” game: if you were stranded on a desert island, which five beauty products would you want by your side? 1- First would be Philosophy’s Purity as mentioned above for starters. 2- a Black Kohl Eyeliner, I am not going to say a brand in specific because I have found 5 or 6 from drugstore to high-end that get the job done for me. 3- Makeup Forever Face and Body Foundation. This stuff works for me rain or shine. Cold or hot. I covers up everything and doesn’t melt away. 4- Sally Hanson 18 hour lip treatment. Its feels great on the lips and adds a little sparkle. 5- a pair of tweezers. Very important must have for any time away from home!
