helen mirren golden globes awards 2011Who doesn’t love Helen Mirren? She is an amazing actress, and her personal philosophies are just the absolute best. I can only hope I age half as well as she has, while remaining firmly confident in my own power and beauty. At the Golden Globes Awards this year, she was stunning in her Badgley Mischka gown and glittering Chopard diamonds. Helen expressed regal confidence and her own inimitable spirit with her softly tousled short coif, styled by celebrity stylist Creighton Bowman of Exclusive Artists Management. “More than the gown and the jewels, Helen herself was my inspiration for creating her look,” says Creighton. “The idea was to translate her glamorous persona and fantastic personality into a style that shows off the real Helen Mirren.”  Here’s how Creighton worked his magic.

  • Starting on wet hair, I applied Volumea Volumizing Foam, and gave Helen’s hair a blow-out, brushing random pieces to turn out in different directions.
  • For body and height at the crown, I set the top layers in small Velcro rollers, using Finishing Hair Spray to lock in the style while keeping hair silky to the touch.
  • Once Helen’s makeup was applied, giving the rollers time to cool, I removed the rollers, sprayed hair with René Furterer
    Naturia Dry Shampoo
and brushed it through. This enhanced body and fullness.
  • Last, I made a cocktail of René Furterer Styling Wax and Modeling Paste, rubbing a dab of each in the palms of my hands and lightly smoothing them over ends of hair for a sleek finish. The gorgeous result: a style that’s both beautifully natural and ultra cool—and utterly Helen Mirren.

natalie portman golden globes 2011The french twist is a tricky hairstyle to master. Once you have it down, though, if you’re like me, you’ll wear it all the time. Before you get started, make sure you have bobby pins and a good hairspray, as well as this video provided by the lovely people at Leonor Greyl.

january jones golden globes awards 2011The lovely people at Leonor Greyl, one of our favorite hair care lines, has shared with us a super easy video to get this smooth, retro look that January Jones had at the Golden Globes Awards this year. It’s a curling iron technique, and will work best with a two inch curling iron, if you have one of those handy.

We love it when you all write in and ask us stuff. It totally makes our day! Kaitlin wrote us recently and asked:

I was just wandering, what are the best shampoo’s & conditioners around, for dry brittle hair. I used to have amazing hair and now it is boring & bland and breaking. I used to get blonde foils & now I have gone fully brunette. Are there any tips and advice you have to offer?

Oh, girl. I feel you. As I’ve mentioned way too many times before, I’ve had a serious run in with bleach last summer, and ever since I’ve been trying to get my hair back into it’s formerly-glorious condition (what can I say? I have Leo rising – my hair is part of my identity!). So yes, I have plenty of advice to give, all of it tried by me.

The first thing I recommend is to get rid of any shampoo or product that has sulfates and parabens in it. When the “natural” products started rolling out, I mostly ignored them. I had read over and over that the sulfites just weren’t that big of a deal and nothing to be worried about. However, after I realized that I needed to try something different to coddle my damaged hair, I gave the whole idea a try, and was absolutely shocked (yes, really) at the results. My hair felt and looked much, much better. Sulfate-free shampoos are everywhere now, and not all of them cost a fortune. Here’s a list of my personal favorites:

Second, you absolutely must deep condition at least once a week. This is so important, because it helps your hair feel softer, silkier, and more manageable, especially if you have frizz or extra dry ends. Most conditioners aren’t formulated with sulfites, so  the brand isn’t that important. Just don’t skip a week if you can help it. Some of my favorites are:

Third, if you wash your hair every day, stop it. Your hair isn’t that dirty. Shampoos can strip your hair of natural oils which help repair damage, and are really unnecessary. If you feel that you must wash, try just rinsing with water or use conditioner. If you have product build up, a apple cider vinegar rinse (about a cup – warm it up slightly so it doesn’t freeze you out in the shower) will gently clear your hair of buildup.

Fourth, make a conscious effort to reduce the amount of heat that you use to style your hair. If you blowdry, don’t flat iron. Don’t wash your hair every day to preserve the heat styling that you have already done. Heat damages hair, and the less you use it the better off you are. Dry shampoos are your friend – and there are so many good ones out there to choose from. A few of my favorites:

And also, be sure to use some sort of thermal shield spray when you do heat style. You must have some sort of protection between the heat source and your hair to keep it from causing further damage.

And finally, depending on how damaged your hair is, consider cutting the worst of it off. I’ve had to go shorter since my bleach incident than I’ve been in quite some time, but it’s so nice to have the healthy new growth replace the yucky brittle hair. It’s not ideal, I know, but sometimes it’s the best thing to do.

Good luck, and thanks for your question!

rsession tools pin up girl kitWhen my hair was longer, I wore updos very often. It was an easy way to do something with hair that needed a wash or when I just didn’t have a lot of time to flat-iron or straighten it. I came across the Pin Up Girl kit by Rsession Tools.

The kit contains a teasing brush, a hair bun, duckbill clips, mini bobby pins, large bobby pins, large u-pins, mini u-pins, headbands, and snaps. Like I said, literally everything you need to create a fab updo.

The bun style was probably my go-to on a daily basis, because it was dead simple. Simply slick hair back into a high ponytail and fan out around the hair bun, then take a bungee and secure the ends and tuck in. Secure with bobby pins and spray with hairspray.

At any rate, if you have long hair and appreciate some volume and retro styles, the Pin Up Girl Kit is an absolute must have.

Available at Ricky’s NYC and ULTA Beauty.

instylerI had so many plans to do a video on the InStyler and post it on YouTube. I kept playing with it and playing with it, trying to become an expert. But nothing I did was as good as the original training video, so I set it aside and tried to come up with another plan for it. I had an extra one for a giveaway, and thought I’d do it for my blogaversary or something. That didn’t work out, since I can’t remember when my blogaversary is anyway. So I donated it to the BeautyBloggers.org charity auction for Doctors Without Borders.

I really love my InStyler. It was the only styling tool I took with me this past Fashion Week in NYC, and that’s saying quite a bit. It does a great job of straightening and curling while keeping shine in tact, and it doesn’t take long to figure out. My only criticism is that you can only do a small amount of hair at one time – and this is probably only a problem for me, since I have masses of hair that must be straightened/curled/beat into submission. The best part about the InStyler is it’s versatility – it can be used to curl, straighten, flip, add volume, and just about anything you can imagine that requires a touch of heat.

The InStyler retails for about $99 at Ulta and other stores, but the starting bid on my brand new one in the package is only $28. Head on over to BeautyBloggers.org and take a look.

larry sims styles lauren frodermans hairI love big hair. I lived in Texas for a short time, and I’m pretty sure people down in those parts believe the bigger your hair, the closer to god. I don’t know about all that, but big volumous hair is my absolute favorite look. So, when this photo landed in my inbox, I knew I needed to share the love for my beauties who are like me, and are so very, very tired of the flat hair trend of the past few years.

hyper hydration soft touch shaping cream by sally hershbergerI’m sure I’ve mentioned it before, but my hair is in some rough condition. I’ve done a number on it this year – color stripping, bleaching, dying, and coloring it constantly. I’ve cut inches off and continue to try and moisturize it back into condition.

Honestly, it hasn’t been easy. I’ve found very few products that work well on seriously damaged hair, and even fewer that help fight frizz and help with dullness. What I’ve learned is that it takes a virtual assortment of products, not just one, that helps rehabilitate damaged hair. So, the question is does Hyper Hydration Soft Touch Shaping Cream fit in?

tresemme fresh start no frizz cremeWhen I was in New York last month for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, I had the opportunity to not only have my hair styled by a Tresemme expert, but to try their new product from the Fresh Start line called TRESemme FreshStart No-Frizz Creme For All Hair Types. It is designed to compliment their line of “in between shampoos” products that help you get an extra day or two out of your blowout.

It’s not a dry shampoo per se, although it has many of the same benefits. It is formulated with mineral clay to absorb impurities and it has citrus extracts to help refresh hair.

“The modern female dandy-stemming from individuality, balance and delicacy,” shares designer Phillip Lim. Lim adds, “The dande-lion is colorful in spirit, subtle in her way. retrodivas video of the weekIn my quest to help my hair get back to it’s healthy state, I’ve been investigating ways to style my hair without heat. Vintage styles often give great ways to control your hair without damaging heat tools, but they do take forever to set – usually overnight. Pin curls are so much more comfortable than rollers, especially if you are sleeping in them. This video is an excellent tutorial on creating the perfect pincurl two different ways. ion studio nycDuring my visit to Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, I had the opportunity to stop by ION Studio downtown to have my hair done. My stylist, Cristina did an amazing job – this damaged mess on my head looked smooth and soft when I left.

We discussed how sulfates can be damaging to porous, curly hair, and she suggested that I avoid them as much as possible, even going without shampoo entirely for a while and seeing if that didn’t help. She went through my hair and painstakingly trimmed my ends do that the especially damaged parts were gone and I could get back to the business of styling it how I wished. Continue reading »

Emma Watson pixie cutThe internets have been abuzz about Emma Watson’s new pixie cut. Personally, I think it’s adorable. I admire anyone who can carry off such a short cut – it takes a certain face shape for it to work really well. Plus, since we have such weird outdated notions of women’s hair in our society, it’s always refreshing to see a woman with short hair. And can we all agree that it’s about a million times easier to take care of?

Let’s take a look at some of the best celeb pixie cuts and get inspired, shall we?
