loreal texture infinium 3In my world, hairspray is a staple. Used every day to help control frizz, create and hold an updo, and to help create volume and texture. Some are better than others, and some work for certain styles but not others.

L’Oreal Professionnel Texture Expert Infinium is an all-around helpful tool for those with thick, unruly, coarse and curly hair. The micro-mist sprays evenly, and when applied properly, the spray will even last through a brushing. The micro-polymers help protect the hair from the elements.

Overall, it’s an excellent spray – it works exactly like it’s supposed to, and the spray is fine and even. It holds well, even a complicated updo.

However, while using it, I kept thinking that the scent and hold reminded me of another product that I already had and used quite often. It took me a short time to figure it out, but eventually it all fell into place. It had the same scent, the same workability as another one of my favorite hairsprays, and it cost twice as much as the one I was already using:

loreal elnett

Yes, my trusty can of L’Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray. I can’t be completely sure, but it seems as if it is exactly the same product, only Elnett costs significantly less.

This doesn’t make L’Oreal Professionnel Texture Expert Infinium any less of a product, but if you are budget-minded, try L’Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray first.

Ted Gibson Tame ItI’m not sure where I picked up Ted Gibson Tame It, or why it has taken me so long to try it, but I am now officially obsessed with it. After a blowout, my hair has a tendency to feel very dry and I often use some sort of anti-frizz or smoothing product to add some softness and reduce the crazy fly-away look that seems to accompany heat styling. The other day I reached in and grabbed this, and I’m so glad I did.

The first thing I noticed was the heavenly smell – like a glorious bottle of merlot. That alone would have made me happy, but as I applied it to my hair and I saw instant smoothing and de-frizzing, I fell even more in love. The merlot complex prevents environmental damage and provides smoothing and increased manageability. The merlot essence provides the incredible scent and aromatherapy benefits. The product also contains wild orchid extract, which tones and conditions the scalp as well as prevents moisture loss. Hydroxyethlcellulose blocks humidity and keeps frizz at a minimum.

While Ted Gibson Tame It retails for $19.95 a bottle, this is an extremely large bottle – eight fluid ounces – and it will last FOREVER. I only needed a nickel-sized amount for my shoulder-length thick, coarse hair. I think it’s a great value and I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase it again.

wen systemI’ve been shampoo-free now for almost five months. Short of just cutting out all the damage that I wrought on my hair, this has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Occasionally, I will use a clarifying shampoo to remove any buildup, at most once a week, but overall, I’ve removed all sulfates and other yucky stuff from all of my hair products.

What inspired me to do this was a gift from my sister-in-law of the Wen system. While the idea of removing shampoo from hair care routines wasn’t new, celeb stylist Chaz Dean certainly brought it to the forefront with his infomercials explaining the system. Essentially, using a cleansing conditioner (such as Wen) replaces shampoo, conditioner, detangler, and leave-in conditioners and leaves your hair in great condition. How does it work? By removing all the harsh detergents and sulfates from the formula. The non-lathering formula is worked into the hair and allowed to remain on for at least two to four minutes, but I leave mine on longer.

Truly, one could achieve the same results with just a standard conditioner and the occasional clarifying shampoo (I love
Hair Rules Aloe Grapefruit Purifying Shampoo
), for a fraction of the cost of the Wen System. In fact, because the Wen was so expensive, I started looking around for something similar, and can you believe I found it? At (where else?) Sally Beauty Supply.

I love Sally’s. When it comes to my hair, I can always find what I need there. They have their own version of the cleansing conditioner system called Hair One. I picked up Hair One Olive Oil Cleansing Conditioner for dry and damaged hair. It set me back $11.99, a fraction of the cost of the Wen. The best part? The results are exactly the same.

If you have dry, damaged, or problem hair or are just interested in removing the harsh detergents from your products to keep your hair in great shape, I’d highly recommend either of these systems. I love the way my hair feels, and I can shampoo as often or as little as I like knowing that the result is going to be the same.

Aveda lead stylist Antoinette Beenders created a glossy and refined flat pony using Aveda Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair, Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray, and Aveda Brilliant Spray-On Shine at the Sophie Théallet Fall/Winter 2011 show.
“The hair at Sophie Théallet this season looks chic and beautiful. A glossy ponytail cascades down the back and is topped with a black beret. A black silk ribbon tied around the neck and over the ponytail imparts a restrained edge, reflective of Sophie’s bad-girl muse.” — Antoinette Beenders for Aveda
This easy hairstyle is simple to re-create at home. Follow these steps:
  1. Apply Aveda Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair to damp hair to repair and protect from heat styling.  Blow dry straight with a Mason Pearson brush.
  2. Create a center part using a fine-tooth comb and flat-iron from roots to ends to give hair a straight, super-sleek look.
  3. Create a low, loose “ponytail” below just the nape of the neck.  Instead of securing with an elastic, wrap a black silk ribbon around the neck, tying in a double-knot over the hair at the back of the neck.  Spray Aveda Control Force firm hold hair spray to keep hair in place.
  4. Place a beret on the head, just covering the hairline above the forehead.
  5. Complete with a generous mist of Aveda Brilliant Spray On Shine for a glossy finish.

Need some ideas on how to get a gorgeous ‘do for the holiday? blow, the new york blow dry bar has some easy ideas to get you thinking.

Sexy Bedhead
Change up your picture-perfect look and let your inner vixen out for the night with sexy, effortless hair.

  1. Starting with dry hair, work in Faux Dry – Dry Shampoo at the crown to remove any oil and to add texture.
  2. Use a 1½-inch curling iron to create curls. Don’t use the clamp, rather wrap hair around the full barrel.
  3. Evenly apply Blow Up Thickening Mist all over. Flip hair over and rake your fingers through the curls to break them up.
  4. Spritz Beach Blow Texturzing Mist into the palms of your hands and scrunch into hair for a tousled look.

Sleek and Straight
If you always wear your hair naturally curly then surprise him with a chic, modern look.

  1. Work in a nickel-sized dollop of Straight to the Point Straightening Emulsion and a dime-sized drop of Weather Girl Climate Neutralizing Complex into damp hair before blow drying.
  2. Using duck bill clips divide hair into 4-6 sections.
  3. Blow dry each section using a paddle brush. The more tension you use, the straighter your hair will be.
  4. Simultaneously run a fine-toothed comb and flat iron through hair for a smooth, straight finish.

Fun and Sweet Up-Do
Keep the night laid back with a playful up-do.

  1. Section off a triangular area of hair at the crown. Using a fine-toothed comb gently tease hair at the back of this section. Draw the front section of hair over the “cushion” you created and gently secure with two small bobby pins by creating an “X” on the top mid/back part of your head. Be careful you don’t flatten the volume you created.
  2. Use a 1½-inch curling iron to curl the rest of the hair.
  3. Gather hair into a loose bun at the nape of the neck and finish with
    Blow Up Thickening Mist
    for touchable hold.
  4. Running late? Skip Step 2 and work in Beach Blow Texturzing Mist to accentuate your hair’s natural texture before creating the bun.

Glamorous Blow Out
Not sure what your plans are? A gorgeous blow out will complete any look.

  1. Apply Ready Set Blow Express Blow Dry Lotion to clean, towel-dried hair. Section hair into 5 sections using duck bill clips.
  2. Dry each section with a large round boar bristle brush. On the final pass for each section switch the hair dryer to the cool setting to set and minimize frizz and fly-aways.
  3. Roll each section back up and secure with clips. Apply Blow Up Thickening Mist to keep the look voluminous all day long.
  4. Remove pins and tilt head forward and rake fingers through hair to loosen up the sections.
  5. Flip hair back and work in a dime-sized amount of Weather Girl Climate Neutralizing Complex for a smooth finish.
  6. Rushing home from work? Fake a fabulous blow out by focusing on the top section of hair. Make sure it is fully dry with ample volume and your look will be drop dead gorgeous.

Aveda lead stylist Odile Gilbert created a sleek and elegant gilded twist using Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener, Aveda Brilliant Spray-On Shine, and Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray at the Jason Wu Fall/Winter 2011 show.

“The Jason Wu hair for this season is elegantly chic—like a piece of art. The ends of the hair are coated in 24-karat gold leaf and shaped like a feather, echoing the gold accents and feathers from the collection.” — Odile Gilbert for Aveda

How to get the look:

generously to keep hair in place.
  3. Coat the hair from roots to ends with Aveda Brilliant Retexturing Gel for a lustrous, polished look.

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?
“Jason’s Baroque-meets-American-sportswear collection this season includes muted black, whites, and nudes highlighted by shots of antique gold, so we wanted to create something simple and elegant—with a touch of luxury.” — Odile Gilbert for Aveda
Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?
“To adapt this style for real life, create a sleek pony with Aveda Brilliant Spray-On Shine and twist into a bun at the nape of the neck, with ends fanning up the back of the head.  Clip with a bright metallic barrette or hair pin to add a shot of glamour.  Spray with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray for a controlled and elegant finish.”
— Odile Gilbert for Aveda
Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?
“My collection was inspired by Robert Polidori’s gorgeous photographs of the restoration of Versailles.  I loved the juxtaposition between Versailles’ rough undersurface revealed during renovation and its opulent Baroque décor, so my clothing this season is a mix of luxuriously embellished fabrics and signature American sportswear.  There are over fifteen types of laces, including a delicately falling leaf motif lace that I embroidered onto day and evening pieces and a gilded lace gown with black and white ‘gear’ palettes.” — Jason Wu

Nelson Vercher, renowned stylist of the Rita Hazan Salon, easily depicts designer Costello Tagliapietra’s inspiration during his runway show at Milk Studios on Friday, February 11th at 3:00PM. The look is a reflection of the late 1960′s and early 1970′s suburban housewives, when women had just begun enjoying their independence.  It’s a loose and sexy appeal that celebrates the modern women who typically wears their hair flat and straight, but instead Nelson creates this unique look which expresses femininity, passion, and eccentric style.

To get the look:

  • Apply Phyto mousse on wet hair and Phyto volume at the root to create texture and lift
  • Rough dry the hair, concentrating on the root for maximum volume and smoothing ends
  • Tease at the root, use a barrel curling iron at the ends to create subtle waves, and smooth the look with a hairbrush

Aveda lead stylist Antoinette Beenders created graceful waves using Aveda Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair, Aveda Air Control Hair Spray, and Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray at the Christian Siriano Fall/Winter 2011 Fashion Week show.

“The Christian Siriano hair for this season is sinuous and matte—beautiful waves that are neither too beachy nor too glam. It’s pretty in the simplest way.” — Antoinette Beenders for Aveda

HAIR STEP BY STEP BY ANTOINETTE BEENDERS FOR AVEDA:
  • Apply Aveda Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair to damp hair to repair and protect from heat styling.  Blow dry straight with a Mason Pearson brush.
  • Use a fine-tooth comb to create a center part, dividing the hair into two sides.  Loosely braid each side and secure at the ends with elastics.  Spray with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray for light hold.
  • Starting at the top of each braid, apply a few seconds of gentle pressure with a flat iron.  Section by section, move slowly down so that the entirety of each braid has been pressed.
  • Gently pinch the sides of each braid between the thumb and forefinger and tug gently to loosen.
  • Remove the elastics and use fingers to loosen the curl.  To create a soft wave, brush lightly with a Mason Pearson brush and set the look with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray.
Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?
“Christian’s collection was inspired by the graceful beauty of orchid flower petals.  We wanted a hair style that captures that natural elegance.” — Antoinette Beenders for Aveda
Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?
“This look is very easy to recreate and works for anyone with a little length to their hair.  To protect hair from heat damage, use a small amount of Aveda Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair on damp hair and blow dry straight.  Then make two braids, one on each side of the head, and spray with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray for light hold.  Use a flat iron to gently set each braid, pressing small sections from top to bottom.  Finally, undo the braids, loosen waves with your fingers, and set the look with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray.” — Antoinette Beenders for Aveda
Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?
“My collection this season is inspired by intricately beautiful details found in plant life, like the petals of a Dracula orchid.  That concept led to stunningly detailed patterns and glamorous eveningwear.” — Christian Siriano

great hair from coast to coastWhen the weather is throwing a tantrum, a gorgeous head of hair is no easy feat! No matter what’s in the forecast where you live, Jet Rhys shares her tips with you.

Snow & Rain
Whether you live in New York City, Seattle, or Aspen, the temperamental weather from thunderstorms to snowstorms can play havoc with your hair. Keep your beauty routine easy by shampooing and conditioning regularly. Limit the use of styling products like waxes and gels. If the rain or snow dampens your mane, hair will become sticky and flat. Instead, use a leave in conditioner that is cream based not oil based.
*Hot Tip: Keep a little pouch in your purse with a mini brush, hair elastics, and pins. If your hair gets wet, it will look chic if you pull it back.

Chilly & Cold
The crisp winter air in cities like Boston, Chicago, and Denver can get cold and dry. Avoid over shampooing, which can strip natural oils from hair causing it to look flat and limp. Jet recommends skipping a day between shampoos and on the days you don’t shampoo, rinse with water then massage your hair and scalp with conditioner.
*Hot Tip: Spray your styling brush with static guard to avoid static from the dry air.

Warm & Sunny
The heat and humidity in cities like Miami and Honolulu translates to sizzling temperatures year-round. Humidity has a tendency to bring out curls and frizz. Don’t fight it, work with it says Jet.
*Hot Tip: Apply a light silicone product to freshly shampooed hair. For extra smoothness, dry your hair thoroughly to combat frizz all day.

anne heche sundance 2011Jeffery Paul created Anne Heche’s gorgeous updo at Sundance this past week. The key to this is creating shape and letting it be easy. At sundance if the cold or dry air doesn’t sway you to create casual hair do’s, then the relaxed comfortable vibe will. No one wants to feel that their look is trying too hard or is too complex and complicated. Anne was feeling just that, she wanted an easy do, that looked DIY, but had a complete look.

Paul used It’s a 10 products, including:

First  an awesome blow out using the miracle leave in treatment.  I love using the M.L. I. on damp hair. The leave in on damp hair helps seal in moisture into the hair shaft and leaves a luminous luster after styling.

After blow drying, warm a small amount of miracle serum on the palms of your hand and run through the hair shaft on the ends

Curl the Hair

  • Using a 1” ceramic iron, curl small sections by wrapping and twisting around the barrel of the iron.
  • Start at the bottom and move in a horizontal line around the head. Then start the next row above and move upwards
  • For a more wavy texture alternate how you wrap each curl as you rotate around the head.
  • When the hair is completely curled you can start the DIY updo.

Miracle fiber is used sparingly.  Warm a small amount on the palm of your hands and as you pin each section up, run in through your hands as you gather and pin.  The fiber will keep the shape of the curl while adding moisture and shine.

  • Take two fingers and place on the crown of your head, now draw a line towards each ear, but behind, and continue to the nape of the neck. This will be your base.
  • Take the base and brush upward. Make a small loose bun or pony tail and pin it.  The hair should be loose.
  • Choose a left or right side to part the hair. I like to part the hair over the arch of the eyebrow.
  • On the side that you parted the hair, smooth this back with a either paddle brush or a small bore bristle brush and pin into your base. Leave the ends loose and with a slight dangle.
  • If long then you can strategiclly pin and tuck in some of the ends.
  • Section the crown, by making a long V from the crown, and  pin away to finish it last.
  • The other side. Loosely gather with your hands and pin into the base also leaving the ends to dangle.

The top

  • Unpin the top section and with a small round brush comb forward and twist as you brush, if your hair has too much curl then use the blow dryer to smooth and create a soft wave and bang.
  • Lightly mist with miracle shine spray.
  • If the hair looks too perfect then actually squish the hair with your hands to loosen and relax.

helen mirren golden globes awards 2011Who doesn’t love Helen Mirren? She is an amazing actress, and her personal philosophies are just the absolute best. I can only hope I age half as well as she has, while remaining firmly confident in my own power and beauty. At the Golden Globes Awards this year, she was stunning in her Badgley Mischka gown and glittering Chopard diamonds. Helen expressed regal confidence and her own inimitable spirit with her softly tousled short coif, styled by celebrity stylist Creighton Bowman of Exclusive Artists Management. “More than the gown and the jewels, Helen herself was my inspiration for creating her look,” says Creighton. “The idea was to translate her glamorous persona and fantastic personality into a style that shows off the real Helen Mirren.”  Here’s how Creighton worked his magic.

  • Starting on wet hair, I applied Volumea Volumizing Foam, and gave Helen’s hair a blow-out, brushing random pieces to turn out in different directions.
  • For body and height at the crown, I set the top layers in small Velcro rollers, using Finishing Hair Spray to lock in the style while keeping hair silky to the touch.
  • Once Helen’s makeup was applied, giving the rollers time to cool, I removed the rollers, sprayed hair with René Furterer
    Naturia Dry Shampoo
and brushed it through. This enhanced body and fullness.
  • Last, I made a cocktail of René Furterer Styling Wax and Modeling Paste, rubbing a dab of each in the palms of my hands and lightly smoothing them over ends of hair for a sleek finish. The gorgeous result: a style that’s both beautifully natural and ultra cool—and utterly Helen Mirren.

We love it when you all write in and ask us stuff. It totally makes our day! Kaitlin wrote us recently and asked:

I was just wandering, what are the best shampoo’s & conditioners around, for dry brittle hair. I used to have amazing hair and now it is boring & bland and breaking. I used to get blonde foils & now I have gone fully brunette. Are there any tips and advice you have to offer?

Oh, girl. I feel you. As I’ve mentioned way too many times before, I’ve had a serious run in with bleach last summer, and ever since I’ve been trying to get my hair back into it’s formerly-glorious condition (what can I say? I have Leo rising – my hair is part of my identity!). So yes, I have plenty of advice to give, all of it tried by me.

The first thing I recommend is to get rid of any shampoo or product that has sulfates and parabens in it. When the “natural” products started rolling out, I mostly ignored them. I had read over and over that the sulfites just weren’t that big of a deal and nothing to be worried about. However, after I realized that I needed to try something different to coddle my damaged hair, I gave the whole idea a try, and was absolutely shocked (yes, really) at the results. My hair felt and looked much, much better. Sulfate-free shampoos are everywhere now, and not all of them cost a fortune. Here’s a list of my personal favorites:

Second, you absolutely must deep condition at least once a week. This is so important, because it helps your hair feel softer, silkier, and more manageable, especially if you have frizz or extra dry ends. Most conditioners aren’t formulated with sulfites, so  the brand isn’t that important. Just don’t skip a week if you can help it. Some of my favorites are:

Third, if you wash your hair every day, stop it. Your hair isn’t that dirty. Shampoos can strip your hair of natural oils which help repair damage, and are really unnecessary. If you feel that you must wash, try just rinsing with water or use conditioner. If you have product build up, a apple cider vinegar rinse (about a cup – warm it up slightly so it doesn’t freeze you out in the shower) will gently clear your hair of buildup.

Fourth, make a conscious effort to reduce the amount of heat that you use to style your hair. If you blowdry, don’t flat iron. Don’t wash your hair every day to preserve the heat styling that you have already done. Heat damages hair, and the less you use it the better off you are. Dry shampoos are your friend – and there are so many good ones out there to choose from. A few of my favorites:

And also, be sure to use some sort of thermal shield spray when you do heat style. You must have some sort of protection between the heat source and your hair to keep it from causing further damage.

And finally, depending on how damaged your hair is, consider cutting the worst of it off. I’ve had to go shorter since my bleach incident than I’ve been in quite some time, but it’s so nice to have the healthy new growth replace the yucky brittle hair. It’s not ideal, I know, but sometimes it’s the best thing to do.

Good luck, and thanks for your question!

amanda jenkins arrojo master stylist nycIn 2011, I’ve decided that I really need to take better care of my hair. And mostly by that, I mean I need to stay away from the bleach.

Amanda Jenkins, master stylist at Arrojo NYC, has a few resolutions that I’m going to be putting into effect immediately:

  • When it comes to hair color application, don’t cut corners.  When in doubt, leave it to a professional.
  • Don’t pick at split ends.  Instead, get regular trims every 6 to 8 weeks.
  • Don’t take your stress out on your hair.  Tightly twisting it causes breakage.
  • Deep condition once a week (bi-weekly if your hair is dry or curly, which makes it prone to dryness)
  • Try to only use hot tools for a maximum of three times a week. Remember to give your hair a break and let it air dry when you can.
  • Don’t shampoo everyday when you shower. Instead, just wet hair and condition or use a shower cap and apply dry shampoo afterwards to absorb odors and oils.

How about you? Any new year beauty resolutions you are considering?
