Product Review: Not Your Mother’s Hair Products – She’s a Tease hairspray and Beat the Heat shield spray
I’m addicted to hair products. There, I’ve admitted it, and now I can move forward. I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to truly break my addiction, but I can refine it into a well edited collection of the best products ever, right?
Okay, maybe I will always have hair products falling out of my bathroom closet, but there are some things I just can’t pass up, and one of those things is the chance to try out a new hairspray. I am an absolute hairspray connoisseur. I have years of experience with hairspray, all going back to my AquaNet in the pink and white aerosol can. I used it to make my 80s “wings” in my hair, and my technique included a blowdryer. Ever since then, I have searched for the ultimate hairspray, and have found some great ones. So when I was offered a chance to try Not Your Mother’s Hair Products, I jumped on it, of course.
In case you needed yet another bit of evidence that all cool things come from Japan, now we have a bit of new hair color technology from SAMY: Fat Foam Hair Color.
SAMY Fat Foam hair color comes in 10 shades, completely covers gray, and is a no-mess foam that can be applied by hand. The foam wraps around each strand and doesn’t drip.
The time has come to treat my hair gently. I am having to say goodbye to shampoos with sulfates and other harsh cleansers that strip my color and don’t do me any favors, so I have been looking around for products that are going to be gentle on my hair, yet effective enough to often justify the higher price tag for sulfate-free formulations. Enter Leonor Greyl, a French brand that is known for it’s committment to natural, plant-based formulas that are both effective and beautiful. Continue reading »
New York Fashion Week Adventures: a visit to ION Studio
During my visit to Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, I had the opportunity to stop by ION Studio downtown to have my hair done. My stylist, Cristina did an amazing job – this damaged mess on my head looked smooth and soft when I left.
We discussed how sulfates can be damaging to porous, curly hair, and she suggested that I avoid them as much as possible, even going without shampoo entirely for a while and seeing if that didn’t help. She went through my hair and painstakingly trimmed my ends do that the especially damaged parts were gone and I could get back to the business of styling it how I wished. Continue reading »
I could not WAIT to get my hands on the Garnier Blow Dry Perfector Kit. It cold very possibly be the answer to my prayers: a smooth blowout with no frizz without resorting to a salon keratin treatment that would cost me several hundred dollars.
I might have mentioned it before, but I have not been kind to my hair this summer. I took it from blue-black to bright red by way of color removers and bleach. I’ve since had to deep condition three times a week and chop off three inches to try and get it under control. So my hair is rather damaged, and one should bear this in mind when they read what products work on my hair. Continue reading »
I’ve been really hard on my hair this summer. Not only have I exposed it to sun, sand, and surf, I bleached it and dyed it. Then I cut off four inches to get rid of the damage. So, I’m in search of products to treat my poor hair delicately. And because dry shampoo is already a part of my routine, I was excited to find Klorane Extra Gentle Dry Shampoo. Continue reading »
On my “need this ASAP!” wishlist: Brazilian Blowout
Has everyone around you been talking about it? I actually carried on a complete conversation with a total stranger while standing in line at Ulta about it. I’ve talked to my hairstylist, my Twitter friends, and other beauty bloggers. In fact, I’ve even talked to my mom. Clearly, I am obsessed with getting the Brazilian Blowout ASAP!
Don’t think that most people are just born with soft, silky, and smooth hair. Chances are, we have to work at it, and work hard. Those of us with curly and frizz-prone hair probably spend entirely too much time standing in front of the mirror trying to get our manes to behave. However, the Brazilian Blowout is so revolutionary that after just one treatment, that it completely eliminates frizz and adds plenty of shine.
The treatment is completely formaldehyde free and only takes 90 minutes in your stylist’s chair. Best of all, there is no three day processing period like there is with some similar treatments out there. I’ve heard of people who have had a five day downtime! Yikes!
The treatment is extremely popular in Hollywood, when gorgeous hair is simply a requirement of life. Check out some of the celebs who are fans of the Brazilian Blowout: Continue reading »
Every now and again something comes along that just rocks my world, and the Redken Real Control Intense Renewal Mask is just one of those things.
Once a week, I give myself a good clarifying shampoo, then slather this product in and let it sit for anywhere between five and fifteen minutes, depending on how badly I’ve treated my hair the past week. Almost instantly, I’m rewarded with the softest, silkiest, most manageable hair I’ve ever had.
It really is that good, I wouldn’t lie to you.
For even better results, sit under a dryer for ten minutes. I guarantee you won’t need to run to the salon for that “deep conditioning treatment” they have.
You can pick this up just about anywhere Redken products are sold. I bought mine at Trade Secret, which reminds me that I should run back in there and give the sales assistant a huge hug for turning me on to this stuff. It will set you back a modest $16.99.
It’s no secret that I am a huge believer in “dry” shampoos. Frequent, daily washing of hair only dries it out, encourages breakage, and prevents protecting natural oils from doing their job. It also strips hair color out much faster, which doesn’t do anyone any favors.
Even better, a mass market dry shampoo. So many of the dry shampoos on the market are extremely overpriced for what they are – many people are shocked to realize that baby powder works just as well and gives you all the benefits of a $27/ounce dry shampoo hair product. But not all of us enjoy using baby powder as a hair rejuvenator, am I right? It’s nice to have a few options out there that won’t break the bank.
HerCut delivers hair care for your hair cut

Hair care has been stuck in the dark ages for awhile – instead of focusing on just your hair, HerCut focuses on how to get the most out of your hair investment – the hair cut itself. Designed for five different types of haircuts, HerCut has a complete line of products for all types of hair and hair cuts.

Summer is almost here, and with it comes the increased chances of that lovely thing we call “bacne.” Acne or breakouts on the back. Ew.
We’ve known for a long time that hair products can contribute to breakouts on acne-prone people, but there was never any sort of solution to it except to not use products on or near the face. Which, really, is pretty unacceptable, don’t you think? How can someone just not use hair products?
However, Kairos has come along and offers a much more pleasant solution: a complete hair care line that not only helps prevent breakouts near the hairline, but removes factors on the hair which could contribute to the problem.
But does it work? More after the jump. Continue reading »
Someone was clearly thinking of me when they came up with the idea for ColorMark. Take a big felt-tip marker, load it up with hair color that doesn’t flake off that you can use with styling products, and sell it for those of us who just can’t bring ourselves to color every two weeks to catch every gray that pops out.
It’s genius, I tell you! I will not be able to live without my black ColorMark ever again. Jump ahead for my video review and tutorial! Continue reading »

You wouldn’t think, by looking at me, that I have ethnic hair. When I say ethnic, I mean I don’t have typical European white hair. Which isn’t surprising, considering most of my family is Native American. However, they all have beautiful hair. It’s thick, long, and straight with very few exceptions. In fact, many of the women in my family have spent countless hours trying to get curls into their hair. I, on the other hand, can’t control my curls, and I don’t even think the term “curls” accurately describes what I’ve got going on. It’s more like frizz with an occasional curl thrown in there for good measure. I don’t know where my hair came from.
I never really paid attention to the ethnic hair section, because I had never been introduced to many of the products, and even what they meant – hairdressing? hot comb? But after lamenting how I couldn’t wash my hair as often anymore and my desire to keep a blowout that a friend of mine said, “well, why don’t you just wrap your hair?” Continue reading »
