I’ve put a few posts up already, but these are the eight best looks I saw during the Golden Globes 2012 broadcast. Deep side parts in the hair made a strong showing, as did low chignons. For makeup, we saw many nude looks, some with statement lashes and liner. The best use of lipstick certainly goes to Angelina Jolie, who matched it to her beautifully understated dress.  Continue reading »

Celebrity makeup artist Gloria Noto prepped Golden Globe Nominee Shailene Woodley’s skin with the Bioré® Combination Skin Balancing Cleanser to guarantee a luminous complexion all night long. Shailene has just hit the red carpet, with an effortless, radiant, look. Here’s how Gloria, who has worked with celebrities like Christina Hendricks and Ashlee Simpson, achieved Shailene’s perfect skin and deep, smudged eyes:

20120115-215148.jpg

Gloria began by prepping Shailene’s skin with the Bioré® Combination Skin Balancing Cleanser. “It’s absolutely vital to start with clean, nourished skin,” says Gloria. “I used Bioré® Combination Skin Balancing Cleanser because it strips away dirt and impurities without stripping skin’s natural moisture.”

Gloria kept things simple with Shailene’s complexion, so she could play up her eyes more. “I wanted to maintain her gorgeous natural glow, so I applied minimal foundation, and just a subtle touch of bronze to contour to her cheekbones,” explains Gloria. “She has a beautiful almond eye shape, so I accentuated that by smudging a dark cream shadow along her eye line, and adding a peach eyeliner to make her eyes pop out even more.”

For a finishing touch, Gloria swiped on several layers of mascara and applied a sheer nude lip color to keep the focus on the dramatic eyes.

How much do I love Nicole Richie’s faux Mohawk/pony? So beautiful. Hair by Suave Professionals, makeup by Beau Nelson, dress by Julien Macdonald.

20120115-185131.jpg

Here is the step by step on how to achieve Nicole’s amazing hair, courtesy of Suave Professionals:

  1. Sleek, smooth styles are all the rage. Nicole Richie worked it, thanks to the Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion System. Copycat it quickly: Spray Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo directly at the root, crown and front of hair.  Use your dryer to work in excess powder, and brush through to refresh hair before styling.
  2. Pull-up and section-off hair around crown, then tease to create volume; set aside.
  3. Use a brush to smooth-out the hair on the sides and back.  Pull the back section of hair into a ponytail, securing it with an elastic.
  4. Take a side section and wrap around the ponytail, securing with a bobby pin. Take the opposite side and also wrap around the pony, securing with a bobby pin.  Lastly, take the teased crown section and lightly smooth and brush back over the ponytail.
  5. Work a dime-size amount of Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Smooth & Shine Serum into the palms of your hands, then delicately smooth ponytail strands and eliminate flyaways.

Did you happen to catch the glowing Beyonce interview with Katie Couric recently? Beyonce took Katie into her new production company and talked plenty about baby. And while pregnancy can account for Bey’s massive glow, I’m quite sure that Miss Mally Roncal had a little something to do with it too.

Mally was nice enough to share her secrets for creating this look with her “My Favorite Things Kit”:  Continue reading »

If you have had the chance to be in NYC lately and are also a huge beauty junkie like myself, the talk of the town was the new Sephora Meatpacking, which disappointed all of us who had hoped to check it out during Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week. Hopes dashed, us nomadic beauty bloggers from points unknown have had to stand by and wait to hear of the news. But while we weren’t able to celebrate this amazing store, Sephora invited a few key VIPs to do the honor, such as Zoe Saldana, Samantha Ronson, who was in support of sister Charlotte Ronson who has a new line exclusively at Sephora, as well as Gray’s Anatomy hunk Jessie Williams,  and of course tattoo artist Kat Von D, who has a successful line already at the beauty mega-retailer.

What makes this Sephora so darn interesting? Taking cues from the super-successful Mac stores, checkout will be totally mobile, with the staff using iPads to keep you on your way with no waiting in line. Also, the trendy location will carry such hard to find lines such as Koh Gen Do, Omorovicza, Ellis Faas, Tatcha, Sentara, and Philip Martins. And of course, no trip to Sephora would be complete without a stop at the ultra-modern beauty studio, which will have customized services for customers.

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to visit until I am back in the city in November. If you have been, share your thoughts! Is it as amazing as everyone thinks it is going to be?

katy perry vma 2011Did anyone watch the VMA’s last night? I admit that I had it on for a bit, but lost interest fairly quickly and switched over to my usual Sunday night viewing – True Blood and Breaking Bad. I did manage to catch Katy Perry’s entrance (how cute was it that Russell Brand escorted her in?), and had to marvel at her hair.

Not the style, although I definitely love the retro vibe. But the color. What color is that? What is going on there? Any ideas? I can’t decide if I’m a fan.

But leaving the color aside for a moment, Renato Campora, stylist for Fredric Fekkai, created this look for her. He began by creating a side part to the wet hair. He applied Fekkai Full Volume Mousse Body Building Foam (Beauty.com, $23) throughout the hair to build a strong and reliable base.  Renato then blow-dried the hair using a round brush. Once the hair was completely dry, he used a ½ inch curling iron to add shape. After letting the curls cool off he allowed the curls to set for 15 minutes and then brushed through the hair.  Renato used Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray (Nordstrom.com, $38) to secure the look, adding a lasting finish and shine. To create the final touch, Renato took a one-inch strand of the hair and pinned it back with a vintage hairpiece, securing it with a bobby pin.

Ever heard of balayage? Chances are you’ve seen it at least. Celebs such as Nicole Ritchie, Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Beil, and Jennifer Lopez have been sporting the look for some time now.

Balayage is a highlighting technique where color is applied by painting individual strands. Unlike foils, which usually distribute highlights in a pattern, balayage highlights are applied freeform using a paintbrush. The benefit of balayage is that it doesn’t show regrowth as quickly as foils do – the regrowth is more natural and in some cases, adds to the overall look, especially if one is going for the popular ombre look.

Here are some celebs sporting the balayage:

[smooth=id:88;]

hairpainting nice and easy by clairolWhile it’s best to get this done in the salon, there is an option for home use, Hairpainting Nice ‘n Easy Blonde Highlights Kit by Clairol. It looks simple enough – mix up the bleach and paint on using the supplied brush. The instruction booklet has some helpful tips for highlight placement.

But for something as involved as this, the salon is your best option. Not every salon has a stylist trained in balayage, however, so it’s best to call and ask if they provide such services. In NYC, Valery Joseph salons are formally trained and have three salons on the Upper East Side as well as a seasonal salon in Bridgehampton. Here in Virginia Beach, there is only one salon that I was able to find who performed balayage – Dupre’s Salon and Day Spa.

Aya Fukuda manicurist to Lady Gaga in Born this WayAnd here is another really fabulous reason to live in New York City. Lady Gaga’s manicurist in her “Born This Way” video makes house calls to your home, hotel, or business, and the rates are quite affordable.

“When I designed Lady Gaga’s nails for Born this Way, I was inspired by her eccentric, yet glamorous style. Designing nails for her is really fun and truly a piece of art. The nail incorporated Swarvoski crystals in jet color and silver metal, with a vibrant red and black polish from Priti NYC. All this was encompassed on a long, almond-shaped tip. I am excited to now share this art with the rest of NYC by providing house calls throughout the city. -Aya Fukuda, Hair Room Service.
