NUIT ETOILEE-WOMENSI’ve been on a summer fragrance kick lately, but a few sniffs of Annick Goutal’s new scent Nuit Etoilee reminds me that perhaps I shouldn’t move into warm weather so quickly.

When I smell this fragrance, for some reason I think of some sort of Scandinavian night, where the stars are bright and visible, and the air is brisk but not freezing. I’m not sure if that’s what Annick Goutal had in mind when they created this scent, but that’s where it takes me.  Continue reading »

tarte maracuja divine shine lip glossWhen tarte said “health food for the lips” they really weren’t kidding. I’ve been struggling with extra super dry lips this season (no earthly idea why), and have been doing my fair share of exfoliation with sugar scrubs and keeping gloss on at. all. times. But I had a busy day recently where I knew I wouldn’t have time to mess with gloss, and by the end of the day I realized that not only did my gloss last all day long, they didn’t need to be scrubbed with sugar to remove the dead skin, either. Win!  Continue reading »

Guess Seductive Sunkissed by Retrodivas BeautyI have a special spot in my heart for Guess fragrances. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away (okay, it wasn’t that far, just in Corpus Christi, Texas, but it was a long time ago – almost 20 years), I had this boyfriend that I was living with. I really liked him a lot, and we got along famously. As a gift, he bought me the original Guess fragrance, and always loved it when I wore it. He wasn’t really the romantic or sentimental type (which was fine, neither was I), but the scent of Guess will always remind me of him. I kept a bottle of it until I couldn’t find it anymore, and moved on to more sophisticated fragrances. And the boyfriend? Well, I married him eventually, and I still think he’s pretty great. But I haven’t found a bottle of Guess in many, many years. Until I got my hands on this.

Back in the 80s, as I was just starting to really be serious about my makeup, I was shopping in the drugstore with my mom. Cutex (yes, the fingernail polish remover people) actually had a small line of makeup, and my mom and I both loved the formula of their mascara. They came in dark green tubes with gold lettering, and the formulas were lengthening or volumizing. While I stood there and discussed the merits of each with my mom, she simply grabbed both formulas and said, “why choose? Let’s get both.” A wise woman indeed. And it was those two mascaras that started my habit of layering a volumizing mascara over a lengthening one.  Continue reading »

how often do you use blush? As I was going through what I affectionately call my “makeup closet” the other day with a friend, I realized that I really didn’t seem to have much in the way of blush. To be honest, I never really gave it that much thought. Like every other beauty addict, I had my NARS Orgasm, plus one more NARS blush that I loved called Crazed. I had a few limited edition blushes from MAC collections that I liked, including Hello Kitty and Lily Pulitzer. I had one or two cream formulas that I had picked up with “gift with purchase” deals, but that was really it. It just didn’t seem balanced, given the literal bins of eyeshadows, lipsticks, foundations, and palettes I had, and all of this started me thinking: why didn’t I take my blush more seriously?

So I’m asking you, as I put together my tour de force on blushes, how often do you use blush?  Continue reading »

Just in time for spring, NARS and designer  Thakoon Panichgul have worked together to create six vibrant new shades. The collaboration isn’t surprising, as the two often worked together during New York Fashion Week, but this is the first limited edition collection created by the two.

Thakoon’s inspiration for the wonderfully bright colors comes from spice markets, and as always, NARS polishes are long wearing, chip-resistant, and  toluene-, formaldehyde- and DBP-free.

Need a closer look at these gorgeous shades? Check out our slideshow:

All of the shades will be available on May 1, 2012 at NarsCosmetics.com, with the exception of Lal Mirchi (the mandarin red), which will only be sold at the NARS Bleeker Street Boutique. Retail is $18.

Which color do you see yourself wearing this spring?

marc jacobsWWD is reporting that Marc Jacobs is in talks with Sephora to launch his own beauty line. Jacobs said he had his first meeting for the color line last week. “I see makeup, fragrance — everything, really — as an opportunity. The idea of choosing a color for your lip, or an eyeliner — it’s just such a delight. The ritual of waking up and making those choices is something people really enjoy. We currently are working on defining what Marc Jacobs cosmetics will be, what they’ll say, what makes them distinctive. I think that will take some time, but the first meeting was good.” Continue reading »
