It’s that time of  year again when you need to break out the LBD for the holiday party circuit. It really is such a fun time to dress up, isn’t it? It’s the season where you can really go all out with the sparkles and amazing fabrics. Sequins can be hard to carry off any other time of year.

While I have tons and tons of favorite dresses this season, one thing that gets overlooked is my tights wardrobe. I have a standard pair of black ones, a standard pair of brown ones, and I think I still have a gray pair lurking around, but it’s just an accessory that I don’t think about very often. So when I saw these new offerings by Hanes (really – Hanes!), I had to check them out.

Back in the 80s, we wore pantyhose, am I right? Nude pantyhose. And you don’t see those anywhere anymore except for Catherine, the Dutchess of Cambridge. I think it was in her marriage contract that she has to wear pantyhose. Can you imagine? But I used to buy pantyhose all the time, in every color. In fact, in my last year of high school and first year of college, I worked at a retail store in the mall that specialized and sold pantyhose. I still shake my head that a store could survive and even thrive on just selling pantyhose, but it’s true. That’s how much we wore them then.

But now? No. But I can see a trend turning a little bit here with these holiday or special occasion tights – they are starting to get just a touch more sheer. And they are certainly going back to the days of embellishments. And I’m pretty certain that is a good thing. Just look at these examples!

  • Square dot: these aren’t actually dots at all, but geometric square shapes all over. Kind of a modern take on the Swiss dot. They would look great under a black skater skirt.
  • Animal: these are rather like very small fishnets, except with a fun animal print. Paired with a simple black dress with no embellishment would be super striking.
  • Chevron: I love these. Chevrons are really having a moment right now, so these are really on trend. The pattern gives your legs somewhat of a 3-D effect.
  • Embellished backseam: My favorite. These are dark, plain tights with the exception of small crystals running down the back of your thigh and calf, reminiscent of the vintage backseam pantyhose. These would be super sexy under a bodycon dress or pencil skirt.

All of these retail for $10, and come in sizes AB, CD, EF and are available at Hanes.com as well as major retailers.
