My face takes a beating in the summer. Oh, I keep it slathered in sunscreen, but all the time spent outside can really do some damage. Even though my skin is oily, the idea that sun and chlorinated/salt water are good for oily skin is an absolute myth. Those things will dry your skin out, cause skin cancer (in the case of the sun), and just generally make a mess. Stick with your typical routine and skip all the dryness and damage that summer can cause.
Starting off, I like to use a gentle but effective pore cleansing wash like Neutrogena’s Pore Refining Daily Cleanser. It decongests pores without being overly drying. It might not be enough for true acne sufferers, but if you have funky pores that you want to clean out (sunscreen, hello!) and perhaps make smaller (because of no gunk in them), then you will like this cleanser. I normally use a stronger 2% salicylic acid cleanser, but in the summer I’m washing my face more often and don’t need all that. There is a whole line including a toner, a cream cleanser scrub, and a moisturizer, all of which are pretty fabulous.
Because my face is so exposed and despite my best effort, I still suffer from the occasional sunburn or other emergency. In those cases, I reach for my b.liv Japanese Sensitive Salvation Repair and Rescue sheet mask. This handy sheet boosts cell recovery, rescues skin from damage, and heals impaired skin. Plus, it feels amazing – cool, easy to use, and relaxing. Take 20 minutes and lie down with this sheet mask on, and you’ll feel right as rain afterwards.
Because I like to skip a few steps – not that I’m lazy, just that I have other things going on – my moisturizer is a combo of serum and moisturizer that works both day and night. Don’t let the company fool you – this is not just a “mommy line.” Mama Mio’s Mighty Moisture is a high-protein day and night moisturizer and serum. It includes just about everything you need to keep skin firm, tight, resilient, elastic and strong.
For an extra wrinkle-fighting boost (because I’m past 40 now, and it’s time to stop fooling around), reach for Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin Rapid Tone Repair Moisturizer. I’m constantly monitoring my skin tone, especially in the summer because it can get funky. But it has a solid 30 SPF rating, so I can wear it all day. There is also a night version if you are super concerned (and it’s pretty wonderful too).
