anne of the frump factorDon’t let the name of Anne’s blog - The Frump Factor – fool you. She has an extensive bag of tricks that is full of awesome products that run the gamut from the budget to the high end. Let’s take a look at Anne’s makeup bag, shall we?

My makeup bag has definitely grown over the years!  I’ve always preferred a more natural look, but now that I’m in my mid forties, it takes quite a few products to give me the fresh, awake, not-too-much-makeup look I’m hoping for!  Pretty much everything listed below will be worn every day – I don’t really change my makeup when I dress up or down.   Here’s my list:
Olay Regenerist UV Defense Regenerating Lotion and Cover Girl Advanced Radiance Age-Defying Makeup (in ivory).  I mix the two in my hand to create my own tinted moisturizer, boldly flouting the popular wisdom that we should choose higher-end products for skincare and foundation.  I get light coverage, a bit of a glow, and no problems with my sensitive. acne-prone skin.  As a bonus, the Olay comes in both SPF 15 and 50 versions, so I can customize my routine to the season.
Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral SPF 30 brush on powder.  It mattifies and sets makeup like any other powder, but also gives me a little extra hit of SPF.  It can be used to reapply sunscreen throughout the day without having to remove makeup, too.
Neutrogena 3-in-1 Concealer for Eyes (in light).  I’m a 2-concealer gal.  This one goes to the dark undereye circles because the color is a perfect match and the liquid formula makes it super easy to apply and blend.
Under Eye Lightener by Cosmetic Cosmos.  This is my second concealer, a thicker formula that I actually use on the eyelids as a shadow base.  With my allergies, contacts, and fair skin, my eyelid area is always red.  This stuff masks that really well, lasts all day, and makes me look awake!
Smashbox Fusion Soft Lights powder in Baked Stardust.  Lighter than a bronzer but brighter than a powder, this adds a touch of color and glow to my face without being too much, which is a difficult balance to achieve.  I apply it all over, like a bronzer.
Estee Lauder Signature Silky Powder Blush in Rosewood.  I have one hell of a time finding a good color match, blushwise, and I often have several floating around in my bag.  Lately, though, this one has been the winner.  Even though it looks like a muddy brown in the compact, it is much brighter on my skin.
Cheek, Lip and Eye Glow in “Promiscuous Coral Pink,” by Cosmetic Cosmos.  I use just a dab of this on top of my powder blush, to make it “pop” a little.  Oddly enough, I didn’t realize that it could be used for lips and eyes, too, until just now when I went to the website to confirm the complete name of the product.  Now I have something new to try!
Pixi gel eyeliner in Jade (for Target).  Gel eyeliner is my secret weapon – nothing else enhances my small, tired-looking eyes the way it does.  I only apply it on the top lashes, in a super thin line right up under the lashline, and very few formulas can do that well.  This one is creamy enough so that it goes on very easily, but it stays put once it’s there.  Beautiful.
Revlon Makeup Eraser Pen.  What can I say?  I’m a klutz, and this stuff clears up those errant smudges quickly and easily.
Maybelline Define-a-Lash Waterproof Volume Mascara.  It clumps less than “Great Lash” and doesn’t cause late-afternoon raccoon eyes like “Full & Soft.”  I also like the very fine brush.
Clinique Instant Lift for Brows in soft blonde.  I have sparse brows which I used to fill in with regular brown eyeshadow until I inherited this pencil from my mother-in-law. Soft blonde doesn’t sound like it would be my color, but it actually looks less severe and aging than the brown did.
Neutrogena Mineral Sheers shadow for eyes in “Sand.”  For some reason, most eyeshadows make my eyes look more tired and red than they already do.  This is a very light, golden-sand sort of color, with a touch of iridescence (but not like a disco ball).  It brightens my eyes like nothing else I’ve ever tried.
Lip Gel (gloss) by Cosmetic Cosmos in “Destiny.”  The perfect formula:  it’s glossy but not runny, it stays put without feeling heavy, and it’s sparkly but not garish.  I couldn’t think of words to describe the color, but the manufacturer describes it as a “muted but bright tone” that combines “light bronze, gold and a touch of pink.”  Whatever it is, it’s perfect for me.
Estee Lauder Pure Color Long Lasting lipstick in “Sugar Honey.”  This was my go-to lipstick before I switched to my lip gloss.  My lips are drier now, and straight lipsticks can be a bit aging.  But when I want a tad more color and/or staying power, I’ll still use this and then layer my lip gel on top of it.
And the last item in my makeup bag is my little pouch of makeup brushes.  Most of them are by Sonia Kahuk for Target, and they work just fine!
And that’s it!  Wow, that’s a lot, isn’t it?  Natural look, indeed!

  1.

When you are mixing the lotion and makeup to make your own tinted moisturizer, how many parts are you using for each to make the mix? Do you find it to be the same as tinted moisturizers off the shelf?

I can’t answer for Anne, but when I’m mixing my own the formula changes according to how much coverage I want. Usually, though, it’s one part foundation to two parts moisturizer/sunscreen.
