The Makeup:

The make-up was all about “MATTE, MATTE, MATTE!” as one of the make-up artists yelled backstage before the show. We got a glimpse at the color inspiration for the show in the sketchbook of the show’s make-up director, Dick Page, Artistic Director of Shiseido, as he rushed to do last minute make-up checks or retouches on all the models. For the lips he chose matte orange lipstick in a bright hue. For the blush he used a dusty rosy-pink. For the eyes he contoured them with black pencil eyeliner (not too heavy) and used a glossy clear eye shadow that gave the eyes a glow as if lip gloss was applied to them. The end result? A fresh, clean look with a bright pop of orange on the lips that matched perfectly with the colorful orange accessories in the collection.   Continue reading »

Stephanie S - A Day in the Life of a Grad Student's WifeIf you haven’t visited Stephanie’s site, A Day in the Life of a Grad Student’s Wife, you need to head on over there and check it out. Not only is it super cute, but she discusses my favorite topics: cupcakes, chocolate, etsy, jewelry, wrap dresses from Gap, and Caboodles. Yes, I said it: Caboodles. You know you had one, don’t even lie.

At any rate, we get to take a peek into her makeup bag this week. Take it away, Stephanie!   Continue reading »

leonor greyl regenerescence naturelle scalp oilThe time has come to treat my hair gently. I am having to say goodbye to shampoos with sulfates and other harsh cleansers that strip my color and don’t do me any favors, so I have been looking around for products that are going to be gentle on my hair, yet effective enough to often justify the higher price tag for sulfate-free formulations. Enter Leonor Greyl, a French brand that is known for it’s committment to natural, plant-based formulas that are both effective and beautiful. Continue reading »

retrodiva media covers mercedes benz new york fashion weekAveda lead stylist Odile Gilbert created a youthful hair look adorned with handcrafted barrettes using Aveda Brilliant™ Damage Control, Aveda Damage Remedy™ Daily Hair Repair™, Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray, and Aveda Volumizing Tonic™ at the Rodarte Spring/Summer 2011 show at Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week.

“The Rodarte hair look for this season is young and innocent. The body is full of natural-looking texture, the ends are straight, and a strong, swooping side part gives the hair a retro feel. The look is inspired by teenagers in the 1970’s, so the effect is very organic, adorned with handcrafted tree branch and leaf barrettes that make a statement.” –Odile Gilbert for Aveda

To celebrate my birthday on September 11, my girl Lianne Farbes (of The Makeup Girl fame) put together Cocktails and Couture. Okay, it wasn’t really for my birthday, it just happened to fall on my birthday, but it was a great way to celebrate. Cocktails and Couture was a great way to bring together brands and online media professionals in the same room to connect, chat, and enjoy some champagne. And I enjoyed the heck out of that champagne! Continue reading »

ion studio nycDuring my visit to Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, I had the opportunity to stop by ION Studio downtown to have my hair done. My stylist, Cristina did an amazing job – this damaged mess on my head looked smooth and soft when I left.

We discussed how sulfates can be damaging to porous, curly hair, and she suggested that I avoid them as much as possible, even going without shampoo entirely for a while and seeing if that didn’t help. She went through my hair and painstakingly trimmed my ends do that the especially damaged parts were gone and I could get back to the business of styling it how I wished. Continue reading »
