During my visit to Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, I had the opportunity to stop by ION Studio downtown to have my hair done. My stylist, Cristina did an amazing job – this damaged mess on my head looked smooth and soft when I left.
We discussed how sulfates can be damaging to porous, curly hair, and she suggested that I avoid them as much as possible, even going without shampoo entirely for a while and seeing if that didn’t help. She went through my hair and painstakingly trimmed my ends do that the especially damaged parts were gone and I could get back to the business of styling it how I wished.
The studio itself is simply beautiful, and after you are greeted, you are given a robe to keep errant hair from being a bother later. A consultation follows, complete with offers of refreshment, and then it is off to an amazing shampoo. Chris, who did my shampoo helped me through the process of leaning back in the unique, specially designed chairs that he termed a “trust fall”, and although they look hard and unforgiving, they are actually amazingly comfortable. Chris then took his time, massaging my scalp and putting a treatment on my hair before escorting me back upstairs to Cristina.
After my cut, she showed me how to achieve natural volume with only a natural-bristle brush and a blowdryer and had me take a look at the back – gone was the frizz and dry, dead ends, replaced with a mane of manageable hair.
ION uses primarily Davines hair products, which are fantastic, and often style for fashion shows including Lela Rose, Giorgio Armani, Proenza Schuler, and Carlos Miele. Editorial work can be seen in many major publications such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Vogue Italia, Allure, and Harpers Bazaar.
