Bobbi Brown Denim & Rose Face ChartI am a sucker for a good palette. I can carry it in my bag, take it on a trip, and otherwise be completely portable with my makeup, without having to carry a bunch of single products around. Not that I don’t love my singles, but when you’re trying to travel light, they are a bit of an inconvenience.

Even better when the palettes have a bit of style – just a touch of rock and roll. Bobbi Brown has introduced a little face palette that is the equivalent of “dressed up denim,” and I’m really liking her breakout style on this one. Usually Bobbi Brown goes for the ultimate neutral, but Bobbi Brown ‘Denim Rose’ Face Palette jazzes it up a bit. Continue reading »

Have you ever gotten a hair cut that was so bad that you actually cried? I remember the first time I was stunned and overwhelmed with my new cut. I was 15, and had just moved to Virginia Beach from Kansas City. I wanted a more up-to-date style (meaning I needed something more east coast and less midwest), and literally put myself into my stylists hands. Unfortunately, her idea of up-to-date was radically different than mine, and I ended up with a really terrible shag-type haircut with bangs and super short layers in a town full of long, straight hair.

It was terrible.

I went home, locked myself in my room, and cried for two hours. At least, it could have been more. My mom totally understood and tried to console me the best she could, but what can you do when faced with a teenager with a bad haircut?

I lived through the experience, but thinking about it still upsets me, even to this day. Jet Rhys, of Jet Rhys Salons in San Diego, CA has some good advice for those who find themselves in this horrid situation. Continue reading »

Summer can be rough. Oh, sure, it’s nice to lounge on the beach, at the pool, and all those backyard barbeques. But it can be rough on your skin and hair. Plus, all that skin that shows when we’re wearing our summer best requires a good deal of our attention. Here are our eight summer must-haves to get you through this cruel summer.

klorane eye makeup removerI have horrid seasonal allergies. Actually, I’m not sure why they are called seasonal allergies when I suffer from them all year, but who am I to argue? Dust mites are at the very tip top of my allergy list, followed closely by grass, trees, weed, and anything else that grows and replenishes oxygen into the air. It’s really fab.

Among my arsenal of allergy remedies are the eyedrops for allergy sufferers – these have made a tremendous difference in reducing my puffy red eyes, and I have recommended them before. Why do I mention this? Because Klorane has a new eye makeup remover called Soothing Make Up Remover with Cornflower which has decongestant properties in it – perfect for those of us who suffer from puffy eyes. clean antibacterial moisturizing hand creamUsually anti-bacterial hand formulations are drying and harsh. Even if they smell good, they usually do a great job at drying out my cuticles and making any small kitty scratches hurt like crazy. However, CLEAN finally did what no one else seems to have managed to do, and gave us a moisturizing lotion that kills 99.9% of germs instantly without using alcohol, parabens, or triclosan. Oh, and it’s hypoallergenic as well. It goes on smooth, smells wonderful, and doesn’t dry out my hands. In fact, it does a great job of keeping my hands from being dry. Who would have thought? pretty woman perfume and votive candle by barbara orbisonBarbara Orbison is the widow of THAT Roy Orbison – you know, the one who performed Pretty Woman? And rather than just hanging out and enjoying Malibu and everything his fame had to offer, she reached back for her childhood dream of creating a fragrance that all women would love and launched it this past holiday season.

“It has been a life-long dream of mine to create a perfume that speaks to women everywhere,” comments Barbara. “I believe that within every woman there is a pretty woman and my signature fragrance helps bring that out that inner confidence and spirit so they feel strong, empowered, sensual and pretty.”

I’m not sure how best to classify this scent, but I would think that it fits fairly well in the spicy floral category. Bergamot opens the scent as a crisp top note, and within minutes the middle note accord of stargazer lily, red rose and carnation develops. The base note accord of amber, patchouli, vanilla, atlas cedar, and incense warm it up and make it last.

Since I’m more of a spicy person and less of a floral person, this is a fragrance that I have to sit with for a bit. It doesn’t turn me on right away, even after the heart begins to develop. I think where this really begins to shine is when the base comes through and lingers on – the patchouli and incense keep things interesting. Continue reading »

erno laszlo beta washIf you don’t know the story behind Erno Laszlo, you are definitely missing out. Dr. Laszlo was born in Hungary, and developed a method of cleansing skin by using soap and water instead of cold cream. This method healed the then-princess Stephanie’s skin, and while still reeling from that success, opened the very first Institute of Scientific Cosmetology in Budapest. He was the first to formulate sunscreens, introduce products that were pH balanced, design water based products for oily skin, develop a skin care system for men, create a skincare system for teens, and prescribe personalized skin care rituals.

Clearly, he knew what he was doing. Continue reading »

AromachologyThe art of personalized perfume is becoming more accessible and expressible with the launch of Aromachology, The Psychology
of Scent. The science behind Aromachology is sending shockwaves through the beauty community by resuscitating new life back into the stale and over-blockbuster-saturated fragrance market with its unique aromatic and systematic process of connecting with the consumer.

Aromachology is the first of its kind to offer custom fine fragrance on a mass level, blended and sold at point of purchase. Meant to reconnect consumers and revolutionize the artistic and scientific experience of creating, enjoying and wearing perfume, the brand is centered on a process that is substantiated by the science of Aromachology.

Fueled by the need to help each customer express individual tastes and personalities by crafting an original fragrance, each formula is conditioned to the likes of its creator. The 1,2,3 quick and easy process begins with the consumer completing a 10 question ‘Scent Profile’ that places them into one of five different and distinct personality groupings.

Each ‘personality’ comes armed with a specific character profile that communicates the differences between the five groupings and what it means to be a Sophisticated & Sensual Floral, a Totally Edible Gourmand, an Exotic Spicy Oriental, a Clean & Fresh or a Bold & Brisk Woodsy. The third and final step is choosing three out of 15 different notes to ‘top off’ your one-of-a-kind creation. Notes have been aligned with different attributes that Aromatherapy studies have proven to stimulate.

Whether you top your fragrance off with words such as passionate, sexy, sensual, focused, open minded or creative, Aromachology gives you the opportunity to create a product that helps convey your identity proudly and
aromatically.

One of the co-founders, Ashlee Firsten, whose background is in Chemical Engineering, believes that the brand’s innovative process is what sets it apart.“Rather than just playing on the art of perfume, we’ve managed to combine the art with the science to modernize and revive a market that has fallen flat. Consumers want to be the creators, and as they should, they are taking the reigns in developing something meant to embody who they are, and how they want to be perceived in this world.”

Aromachology is launching their permanent space at Henri Bendel in New York on Monday, March 22. Aromachology private label is also available at Exhale Spa’s New York locations.
