kairos anti-acne blemish shampooSummer is almost here, and with it comes the increased chances of that lovely thing we call “bacne.” Acne or breakouts on the back. Ew.

We’ve known for a long time that hair products can contribute to breakouts on acne-prone people, but there was never any sort of solution to it except to not use products on or near the face. Which, really, is pretty unacceptable, don’t you think? How can someone just not use hair products?

However, Kairos has come along and offers a much more pleasant solution: a complete hair care line that not only helps prevent breakouts near the hairline, but removes factors on the hair which could contribute to the problem.

But does it work? More after the jump. Continue reading »

april is all about hair at retrodivas beautySomeone was clearly thinking of me when they came up with the idea for ColorMark. Take a big felt-tip marker, load it up with hair color that doesn’t flake off that you can use with styling products, and sell it for those of us who just can’t bring ourselves to color every two weeks to catch every gray that pops out.

It’s genius, I tell you! I will not be able to live without my black ColorMark ever again. Jump ahead for my video review and tutorial! Continue reading »

april is all about hair at retrodivas beauty

You wouldn’t think, by looking at me, that I have ethnic hair. When I say ethnic, I mean I don’t have typical European white hair. Which isn’t surprising, considering most of my family is Native American. However, they all have beautiful hair. It’s thick, long, and straight with very few exceptions. In fact, many of the women in my family have spent countless hours trying to get curls into their hair. I, on the other hand, can’t control my curls, and I don’t even think the term “curls” accurately describes what I’ve got going on. It’s more like frizz with an occasional curl thrown in there for good measure. I don’t know where my hair came from.

I never really paid attention to the ethnic hair section, because I had never been introduced to many of the products, and even what they meant – hairdressing? hot comb? But after lamenting how I couldn’t wash my hair as often anymore and my desire to keep a blowout that a friend of mine said, “well, why don’t you just wrap your hair?” Continue reading »

april is hair month at retrodivas beauty

Being a dark haired girl, shine is of extreme importance to me. I will try just about anything from deep conditioning treatments to spray shine to boost the shine in my black hair. So any time there is a new product out there that claims to boost shine, I always sit up and take notice. Continue reading »

april is all about hair at retrodivas beautysebastian volupt spraySebastian, one of my favorite hair care lines, has released a new product called Volupt Spray that is an excellent multi-tasker. Not only is it a spray gel, it’s a root lifter and a heat protectant.

Back in the ’80s when I started actually doing my hair, big hair was all the rage, and we thought that all we needed was a curling iron, a bad perm, and a can of Aqua Net to get that look. Little did we know that big hair was going to go away for almost 20 years and reappear at a time when products were so easy to use. Volupt spray truly gives you just about everything you need to get that big hair look, and all that’s left over are a few styling tips. So I’ve put together a little video of myself (not wearing any makeup, even!) showing you how easy it is to get that just-rolled-out-of-bed-yet-I-have-fab-hair look.

There is some interesting technology behind the product: apparently two layers of micro-particles bind themselves to the hair’s surface, and some raise the hair cuticles and rough up the hair creating volume, and others fill in the cuticle gaps creating softness and volume.

april is hair month at retrodivas beauty

I am a girl who loves her hairspray. It’s a necessity for a curly girl like me, who occasionally beats it into straight submission. These things are not easy, and I believe it is my fundamental right to have a blowout last at least two days. To that end, I rely heavily on products (and hats, and shower caps, and all sorts of things) to keep things under control.

rusk w8less hairspray

Enter my new love, Rusk W8less Hairspray. I love it because it’s not like the other hairsprays out there – this one takes me back to 1986 and my addiction to Aqua Net in the white and pink can.

Yes, it’s like that.

I think it’s great that people want a “flexible” and a “brushable” hairspray. I really don’t. I want something hard core that will keep my meticulous updo exactly in place without having to stress about the flyaways and the escapee hairs along my hairline. Not to mention the frizz that inevitably breaks out if the temperature is above 30 degrees. Rusk W8less Hairspraydoes all that and more, keeping everything under control, even when I’m out in the elements.

Are you a hairspray girl? Trust me, you’ll really like this one. Grab it at Folica.com for about $14.00

“Last season, we saw a lot of conventional looks – super sleek, tamed texture, perfect twists and classic chignons. When I think spring, I think unexpected playfulness, so I’m excited that the hair trends I’m seeing are in synch with the essence of the season. Classic styles will go to the extreme or, as I like to think, depressed winter hair is finally ready to be exposed again, yet looks will still maintain a genuine romantic feel that reflects the positive mood of warmer weather,” says Halle Bowman, Celebrity Stylist for Pantene.
